Today is the last day to register on the Do Not Call list. All cell phone numbers will be released and made available to telemarketers. To prevent unsolicited calls, visit www.donotcall.gov and follow the easy instructions.

Don't sweat it. I get so many chain e-mails claiming one thing or another that I'm on snopes quite a bit. I try to not forward anything that I can't confirm. This one sounded familiar.

Just a quick note on the do not call website... It is a legit government website established to prevent most telemarketers from soliciting sales on registered phone numbers.

Troof, we registered our home phone number a while back. One thing concerns me about registering cell phone numbers though. Snopes.com say that it's not necessary, but if you do so, there's no adverse effects. But, what happnes after the five year period? Do they release a list of previously registered numbers that have expired? In that case, you effectively register your own number as OK to call, just with a 5 year lag time . I don't know if that will happen or not. I don't have a problem with unsolicited calls on my cell phone, so I didn't register.

If this helps, Verizon corporate sent a directive to it's managers to register all company phone numbers in which they are responsible. In turn, our foremen delegated that responsibility to us and advised us to register our own personal numbers. I showed the Snopes article to my foreman and he replied to the effect of ' While it may be true that cell phone numbers, in general, will not be released to telemarketers, they do still have an unregulated capacity to use any unregistered numbers that they obtain through other means.' In other words, they may obtain your cell or home number from other means, such as a credit application, and use it to solicit sales or they may even sell the number(s) to others. Being on the registry is supposed to prohibit bone fide companies from allowing such events from taking place. In any event, whether you choose to register or not is probably a personal decision and warrants no further discussion from me Lombardi out!
